Before we look at what you’ve told us about your own skin, we thought we’d give you an overview of what you can generally expect from your skin when you’re in your forties.

If you just want to know about your own skin, just forward to the YOUR SKIN TYPE section.

Deeper wrinkles and less elasticity and firmness are the most common skin issues that affect men in their forties. Wrinkles are usually caused by two things – years of UV exposure and hormonal changes as the production of testosterone diminishes.

These factors wear away the skin’s underlying support structure and slow down its ability to retain moisture, so if you want to keep the wrinkles at bay for a few more years, you’ll need to use a good moisturiser.

The reduction in sebum that usually happens by the time you hit your forties is great news for anyone who has been plagued with spots and breakouts in earlier years – but for most people it also means that this natural source of moisture needs replacing.

You tend to lose some of the fat from the subcutaneous bottom layer of your skin as you get older, and this can leave your skin more fragile and prone to damage. If your skin feels a bit duller than it used to, it is because your skin cells are now taking longer to regenerate. Your dermis, the middle layer of skin, will continue to lose its elasticity, and the top layer of skin starts to get thicker because the dead cells stay around for longer – the best way to counteract this is with exfoliation, which should now be part of your regular skin care routine.

THE AGEING PROCESS
As we grow older, the water-retaining properties in our skin start to diminish, the skin thins, and cell renewal slows down.
