What are Ceramides?
Thanks to more awareness of skin barrier health in recent years, Ceramides have secured their status as one of the most in-demand skincare ingredients right now.
In this article we’ll be covering what are ceramides for skin and how to add them to your routine.
Plus, spilling all the details on why the Ceramide Booster complex in our new Active Skin Barrier Care range is about to be a game changer...
What are Ceramides?
Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids (also known as fatty acids) found in the skin. They’re created by the sebaceous glands and are so vital to overall healthy skin function that they make up approximately half of its overall composition.
They act a little like cement, holding your skin cells and more together. This creates a protective layer that defends against things like pollution and helps prevent moisture loss.
What are the three essential Ceramides?
There are 12 types of Ceramides overall, but three ‘essential’ types are Ceramide 1, Ceramide 2 and Ceramide 6-II. These are the main varieties found naturally in the skin and are often used in skincare.
How are Ceramides depleted?
From around our mid-twenties, our natural Ceramide levels begin to drop as part of the natural ageing process.
Ceramide levels can also become temporarily depleted by things like seasonal weather changes, an unbalanced diet and harsh skincare.
When this happens, our natural Ceramide barrier becomes compromised, and our skin can quickly become irritated.
Some signs your skin barrier is damaged include:
- Flaky, dry skin
- Itching
- Redness
- Increased sensitivity
- Skin infections
- Hyperpigmentation
- Dullness
- Flare-ups of pre-existing conditions like eczema or rosacea
- More visible fine lines and wrinkles
- Breakouts

What are the benefits of Ceramides?
Why are ceramides good for skin? Well, using topical Ceramides helps restore your skin’s natural lipid levels and support your skin health.
This can be especially important if you have sensitive skin, which can experience irritation when your skin barrier is damaged.
Some of the key benefits of Ceramides in skincare include:
- Strengthening your skin barrier
- Defend skin against environmental aggressors
- Prevent excessive moisture loss
- Replenishing dry skin
- Minimising signs of ageing
Is Ceramide better than Hyaluronic Acid?
Ceramides and Hyaluronic Acid have similar yet slightly different functions when it comes to how they’re used in skincare.
Ceramides replenish and defend the skin barrier, whilst Hyaluronic Acid plumps the skin and acts like humectant (an ingredient that draws moisture from the environment to the skin’s surface).
So, the good news is you don’t have to use one or the other and they’re even more effective when used in combination.
Instantly hydrate your skin by smoothing on a few drops of our 3% Hyaluronic Acid + B5 Booster Serum after cleansing and before you moisturise as part of your morning and evening routines.
Should you use Ceramides every day?
Ceramides are safe to use daily. In fact, using them consistently as part of your daily regime will help make your skin look plumper and firmer.
Try using skincare products with Ceramides as part of your morning and evening facial skincare routines for a few weeks and watch the transformation.
Are ceramides good for oily skin?
As everyone’s skin is contains a large amount of lipids, all skin types can benefit from using products with Ceramides in.
When it comes to oily skin, Ceramides’ ability to reinforce the skin barrier can help prevent bacteria entering the skin, which can lead to breakouts.
Oily skin can overproduce oil when it’s stripped of moisture, so Ceramides can help keep moisture locked in and balance the skin.
What’s the difference between Ceramides and Ceramide Boosters?
While topical Ceramides play a vital role in supporting healthy skin, they only reach the top layers of the skin.
The Simple truth
Unlike topical Ceramides that sit on the skin's surface, our Ceramide Booster technology reaches deeply into the skin and stimulates your natural Ceramide production.
Not only does our Ceramide Booster technology penetrate deeply through up to 10 skin layers, but it also stimulates the skin to produce its own natural Ceramides - this helps repair your skin from within.
