What Is Micellar Water and How Do You Use It in Your Skincare Routine?
Micellar water has gone from a trending term online to a true skincare staple lately and we’re not surprised at all. It has firmly earned its place in our bathroom cabinets because it’s just so quick and easy to cleanse with.
Gentle and rinse-free, micellar water removes make-up and grime super effectively in seconds - without being harsh on your skin’s protective oil barrier.
The Simple truth
Micellar water contains 'micelles', tiny molecules that cleanse skin by attracting oil and dirt like a magnet. Our formula not only purifies, it instantly boosts hydration by up to 90%.
So, how does micellar water work and how do you use it? Read on for all the important (and surprising!) info on this clever cleansing water.
The story behind micellar water
Micellar water may have had a sudden surge in mainstream popularity in recent years, but it’s actually been around since the beginning of the 19th century. It’s thought to have originated in France, back when water wasn’t as safe and available as it is today, so this was considered a gentler way to cleanse.
In more recent times, micellar water became a backstage essential at fashion shows. That’s all thanks to its ability to purify skin without leaving it oily, unlike many other cleansers in that era, which could affect the look and performance of make-up. Now, many of us are experiencing the beauty benefits for ourselves.
We might all be completely obsessed with the results, but lots of us still don’t know exactly what it is or how it works. So, let’s dive into the science...

What is micellar water and what does it do?
It might look like regular water from a distance, but there’s much more to micellar water than meets the eye...
Along with purified water and skin-nourishing ingredients, micellar water works via clever little cleansing bubbles known as ’micelles’. Each tiny ball of cleansing oil molecules that makes up the micelles work like a magnet to actively attract make-up and impurities.
Oil attracts oil, so once micellar water is applied to a cotton pad (or cloth) and it touches the skin, the micelles dissolve and trap impurities on the surface. The micellar water effortlessly lifts them off your skin and onto the pad.

Micellar water benefits to know
Micellar water is amazing at wiping away make-up and impurities - without upsetting your skin’s natural balance.
It effectively cleanses, unclogs pores and tones in one step with no need to wash off.
Our Kind to Skin™ Micellar Water has the added bonus of being enriched with ingredients like Vitamin B3 and Vitamin C, which hydrate and brighten. In fact, our formula gives you four hours of hydration.
You can enjoy using micellar water, no matter what your skin type. Like all Simple products, this formula contains no perfume, colour or harsh chemicals that can cause irritation, making it perfect for even sensitive skin to use.
How to use micellar water
One of the reasons micellar water is such a popular product is because it might just be the easiest thing in your entire skincare routine to use. All you need to do is...
1. Apply a little of the micellar water onto a cotton pad (ideally a reusable one).
2. Smooth over the skin’s surface and over closed eyes until your make-up is removed (if you are wearing any, that is) and your skin looks and feels clean – no need to rinse after.
3. Depending on what time of day you’re using your micellar water, follow with your favourite serum, moisturiser, sunscreen or any other next step in your routine that you like.
Top tip: you can also dip a cotton bud into micellar water and use it to tidy up any make-up mishaps.
When should I use micellar water?
Micellar water is an ultra-versatile skincare product, so you can use it as part of your daily routines or even for quick freshen-ups between if you need it. So, it’s all about what works best for you and your lifestyle.
Depending on your skin type, you might not always need to reach for a facial wash or cleanser first thing. We tend to go for micellar water in the morning, especially when we’re already running late for work.
It’s also good for travelling, after the gym and all those late nights when you’re too sleepy for a full skincare session but do want to make sure you remove make-up before bed. After all, no one wants to wake up with mascara all over their pillow.
In the evening, we’d still recommend doing a more intensive cleanse with a cleanser or face wash to help eliminate dirt, pollution, SPF and oil that can really get into your pores. You could always use micellar water before your gel, cream or oil cleanser to help thoroughly rid your skin of any grime.
Likewise, if you’ve had more of a full-glam day in terms of make-up then you might want to use something more intensive to help you dissolve it. Micellar water can sometimes wipe away waterproof make-up, but you still might need an extra helping hand on the cleansing front if you’ve used products with incredible staying power that just won’t budge!
