What is Toner? Here’s Everything you Need to know
Face toner is possibly one of skincare’s misunderstood (and totally underrated) products
There’s lots of myths around toners like they’re harsh on skin or they’re a bit unnecessary... but they’re actually packed with beauty benefits that we don’t want you (or your skin) to miss out on.
Which is why we’re here to answer some of your top questions about toners, as well as talking about our Kind to Skin™ Soothing Facial Toner and why it's one of our most-loved products.
So, if you’ve been wondering ‘what does a skin toner do?’ lately, then you’ve come to the right place...
Your top toner questions, answered
What does a skin toner do to your face?
Toners are water-based skincare products that are designed to work as the ‘in-between’ step in your skincare routine.
Face toners are often formulated differently for skin types or to give specific skin benefits.
The Simple truth
Face toners help remove final traces of dirt, makeup and balance your skin's pH level. Ours has been formulated for sensitive skin, to soothe as it refreshes.
However, most of them will help remove final traces of dirt and excess oils, cleanser residue and balance your skin’s pH level.
Some toner advantages include:
- Removing any last traces of excess oils, make-up and dirt
- Restoring your skin’s natural pH balance
- Preparing your skin to better absorb skin care

What skin type needs toner?
Because toners are great at targeting your skin’s needs, all skin types can benefit from using one - it's all in finding the right formula for you.
People with oily skin especially can find adding a face toner into their routine helpful, to remove excess oil that their skin creates without overdrying it (which can lead to even more oil being produced.)
If you have dry skin or experience reactions quite easily, then finding a face toner that won’t irritate your skin or strip away moisture is key. You can find more tips on hydrating your skin here.
Our Soothing Facial Toner is formulated with sensitive skin in mind, so every skin type can enjoy using it. More on that later in this article...
What’s the difference between cleanser and toner?
Cleansers are designed to purify skin and remove makeup, dirt, pollution and more.
Toners, on the other hand, are formulated to help rebalance your skin after you cleanse. That’s why you use them after you’ve used a face wash, micellar water or other purifying product.

Do you really need toner?
Is skin toner necessary? Whilst some people think it’s not absolutely essential in the way that cleansing or moisturising is, we think it makes a big difference to our overall routine.
Think of it as a way of elevating your key skin care steps. From making sure your skin is ultra clean and revitalised through to helping your serum sink in more effectively.
Not to mention that it’s super refreshing, which we all need to wake up in the mornings or to revive our skin after a long day.
Can I use toner every day?
Yes, especially if your face toner has been designed to be super gentle on skin like ours is.
Depending on the formula you’re using, you can usually use it twice daily as part of your morning and evening skincare regimes. But it’s totally up to what works best for your skin and your daily routine.
How do you use toner?
Toning is one of the quickest and easiest parts of a skincare routine, which is even more of a reason to try it out. All you need to do is...
1. Wash your face using your favourite cleanser and pat dry
2. Apply toner to a reusable cotton pad and sweep across the skin – no need to rinse
3. Follow up with your serum, moisturiser and any other skin care products in your regime
If you exfoliate a few times a week (we recommend that you do), then do this after cleansing. Rinse off and dry your skin before applying your toner.
Do you wash off toner?
No, one of the great things about face toner is that you don’t have to wash it away after you apply it. Just sweep it across your skin, allow it to dry slightly and move onto your next skincare steps.
Leave it on and let its nourishing ingredients get to work prepping your skin for the next parts of your regime.
